Artist Statement
My main practice consists of oil painting and drawing. I intertwine themes of impermanence, constructs of femininity, sexuality, and self-image rooted in my experiences as a woman. My art is a representation of an intensely brooding nature of feeling, memory, and perception- that of stifled desires and bitter recollections.
Existing somewhere between confrontation and escapism, my art combines stylized representational realism with automatic drawing. I am interested in the dissonance and coexistence of obsession and dissociation, passion and emptiness. The subjects are often woman-presenting figurative manifestations of the entanglement with desires, frustrations, expectations, and the pressure to perform. My work attempts to pin the transitory state of being aware of the absurd, still unable to unravel oneself from these attachments. The knot can be a dull burning, a flood of indiscernible feeling, an expression of self-restraint. Through reactive processes of tangential marks and concepts, my work takes form as distorted mirrors of my perception.
